MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Connor Naismith, has issued a statement following arrest of a man for sexually assaulting a teenage girl outside an asylum hotel in Crewe.

Around 6pm on Wednesday 24 September, Cheshire Police were called to The Royal Hotel, Nantwich Road, following reports a 14-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted.

20 minutes later, a 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, with enquiries ongoing.

The incident was recorded and circulating on social media, appearing to show the man slapping the teenager twice, including on her bottom.

The girl's family have requested the footage be removed from social media.

In a statement, Mr Naismith said: "I am aware of footage circulating online relating to a male and a young female outside the Royal Hotel on Nantwich Road in Crewe.

"I want to be clear that the safety of women and girls on our streets is of paramount importance to me, and I will always speak out and act where necessary to ensure those who perpetrate abuse feel the full force of the law.

"Upon seeing the footage late last night, I immediately contacted the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Dan Price, who informed me that an arrest had been made and that action is being taken.
